With Easter and tax season approaching you may be asking yourself the same question many Christians do this time of year: what would Jesus do in my situation? The past year has been extremely turbulent, whether you are prospering, struggling, or just starting to pay attention to your finances it can be daunting. How would you feel if I told you the Bible tells you exactly how to handle your money? In the book, “The Blessed Life” by Pastor Robert Morris, he breaks down how much the Bible talks about money. He states, “There are more than 500 verses in the Bible concerning prayer and nearly 500 verses concerning faith, but there are more than 2,000 verses on the subject of money and possessions. Jesus talked about money in 16 of his 38 parables.”
Clearly from these numbers Jesus wants you to have a rich, prosperous, and generous life based on biblical principles. One of the most commonly misquoted scriptures says that, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil,” (I Timothy 6:10) It is usually quoted as, “money is the root of all evil.” No, you cannot serve two masters without loving one and hating the other. Love Jesus, not money. Loving money is worshipping a false idol. Money is not inherently evil, but it can become evil. In the Bible, it is also said, “the borrower is Slave to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7) So, when you borrow money it prohibits you from effectively carrying out the Lord’s work because you are too busy serving someone else. Debt prevents you from doing wonderful things for you, your family, and even for others. It is ok to handle money well and be wealthy. Doing that allows you to help a single mom in need without taking away from your family. Changing that mom’s day, maybe even her outlook. Now that’s huge. Carrying out God’s work, whether it is through a small or big act of kindness, happens way more often when you aren’t serving two masters.
